Response to President Obama’s Speech

from CNN.com

“This isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.” Read text of Obama’s speech to students (pdf)

Several Cabinet officials are slated to deliver similar messages at various schools across the country throughout the day.

In the past week, news of Obama’s speech had upset some parents.

“Thinking about my kids in school having to listen to that just really upsets me,” suburban Colorado mother Shanneen Barron told CNN Denver affiliate KMGH last week, before the text of the speech was released.

Okay, someone telling your child that the future of America depends on them upsets you? Someone saying that the necessary foundation of education is essential for not only themselves but for a country upsets you?! Honestly, what is the world coming to? A president cannot come to a school and give a speech on the importance of education?! Seriously, wake up world. There were a lot of points to this speech, and it was very necessary. A valid point made is that nothing is an excuse for class negligence. “You make your own future,” Obama said during his speech. This is a true statement. For people to try to use this simple, yet effective speech against him is very ignorant. Truth is, education IS important, because the students ARE the future of this country. Without a proper education, poverty will only get worse. More people will be less qualified for jobs because they do not have the background.

Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has
something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that
is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide. – President Obama

This world and its people….can point a person in nine, ten, or even a hundred directions. It is up to the individual to have the foresight to make a decision, to make a choice. Some choose education because it is a path to success. Some choose it because there are no jobs without a continued education. Others choose it for enjoyment. IT IS STILL NECESSARY. Education is still important and anyone can agree on this concept. Otherwise, we will be looking at a world of uneducated people, lacking the knowledge and potential necessary to keep the wheels of this ride called USA rolling.
