How To Make A Difference: 1 Thing You Can Do Now

The #1 rule in creating success is to show up. Merely show up.

When we look to make a difference in life, we, as a people, like to look for the magic bullet, that 1-2 punch, the quick knockout. Here is the punch: SHOW UP.

Just show up.

When you don’t want to wake up in the morning, just show up. For that, it would mean moving the alarm clock further from the bed. That way, the snooze is difficult.

When you don’t want to get to the gym, just show up. Maybe that means sleeping with your gym clothes packed near the bed. The first thing you see when you wake up is the bag. Watch it light a fire.

A lot of things that happened were because I was in the room. Let me write about my last 2 “just show up” moments.

#1 – I hung out a bit longer during my fraternity’s regional meeting. I had given my update as the Tech Coordinator and was reading up on the takeaways given to me. The Chief of Staff tapped me on the shoulder and asked me about the national website and my thoughts. After he heard what I had to say, he asked me to join the National Team. I showed up for a few months, doing what needs to be done, and the Grand Polaris asked me about being the Director of Technology. That put me on the Grand Council of Iota Phi Theta, responsible for current and future technology innovations.

#2 – I was not feeling the gym workout one Wednesday evening, but I showed up anyway. I got started and feeling better. Once I finished, I bumped into a friend of mine, who told me about the company he was working for and that it was expanding. That expansion was new opportunities and new jobs. Fast forward 2 months later, and I got my start, doubled my salary overnight, and on the road to a successful career. Fast forward 7 years later, I get pulled into a conference room about a promotion. Bam, Client Delivery Manager, short term dream reached. Now I am working on an additional goal by having a Senior in front of that.

That made me want to show up more. For the past few weeks, I showed up here for myself, and you. Thanks for hanging with me on social media, especially on Instagram. More content to come.
